Southern Comfort by Wayne Bear Kerns Reviewed by loner Included: read me, cameo, splash. Hole number signs, ball washers, custom flag and assorted objects in keeping with the confederate theme, a statue with confederate flag on the 7th hole, large home with a cannon and flag on the 9th hole, graveyard, cannon and flag on the 11th, and a stately old manor house (clubhouse) with flag on the 18th hole. Not included: custom tees, hole signs, or hole previews. Statistical information: par 72, 6247y, played pro, bck/nw/m/m, for fantasy type course, 5 par 3s. 8 par 4s, 5 par 5s, and a 7.2mb download. He started off with attractive rock trim around an island course and continued with nicely finished water hazards. His bunkers although never coming into play, are well made and fit in with the course colors. The tees, roughs, and greens blend well together. The fairways, although a little light in color, were nicely textured, especially for a small download such as this. I felt the tree selection and placement was excellent for this course as well as the deep green mountain background. The use of color is a little heavy-handed but tolerable. Overall it was an attractive course but definitely a fantasy course. The fairways, even though they looked narrow in the top view, were all very hittable. Once you reached the surface of the greens they became a boost for the old ego‚ birdies and eagles galore. They were quite easy, but to get there, you first need a well placed approach shot. Since the majority of the greens were turtle backed I would suggest that you don't hit long or short or you will have a considerable putt or chip from the fringe. The elevations were varied, interesting, and accurate, as was the caddie. Hole 3, par 4, 352y, on this dogleg to the left I was able to cut across the low tree line to within 50 yards of the green and an easy approach to the flag. A perfect birdie opportunity. Hole 11, par 5, 532y, he has an interesting water hazard across the fairway that forces you to lay-up with a 3w. Your second shot should give you an easy pw to the flag. The initial impression from the tee and in the top view makes you feel that a birdie is very possible on this hole very deceptive. Hole 18, par 3, 105y, this hole replete with it's 19th century clubhouse flying the confederate flag is an attractive gimmie or birdie hole if you judge the drop with an adjustment in trajectory. Since I review without wind, I went back in practice to replay this hole just to see if the clubhouse flag moved in full wind it didn't. I was disappointed and therefore need to ask--- is it a design flaw or me, (can't be me). This is hardly a difficult course to play, and it is very playable. Unfortunately the majority of holes are lacking in imagination, So there is very little challenge. Yes, it is a good-looking course and a small download, but it is just another nice course. If you like to have a variety of small, well made courses on your hard drive, then it definitely is for you, but I would recommend it only for that reason. I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players. "loners" Rating is 71% |

| Twin Lakes PA Twin Lakes PA by Simon Buckner Review by "loner" Included: read me, cameo, splash, cart path, carts, buildings, and large comfortable benches. Not included: custom flag, custom tees, hole signs, hole preview, or ball washers. Statistical information: par 70, 6623y, played pro, bck/nw/m/m, "R" type course, 52mb. download, 5 par 3's, 10 par 4's, 3 par 5's, six tees?, Eye candy best describes this huge course that is only 6623y long. The tees, greens, textured fairways and attractive rough lay a foundation for this beautiful course. The varied undergrowth and use of color add significantly to the unique nature created here. His use of planted areas with boulders creates small rock gardens for your added enjoyment. Truly a standout in beauty. With all the imagination put into creating all of this beauty it doesn't, unfortunately, make a course into a challenging golf game. The bunkers aren't placed effectively and vary between white and brown sand. I prefer the brown, as it seems to fit in with the rest of the custom dĂcor. The large numbers of trees on this course seem to be an occasional rather than a consistent impediment. The fairways, while not appearing wide in the top view, were very "hittable". The putting varied from easy to moderate depending on the green. Your final putting score should be more than acceptable. With all the different hazards on this course; trees, bunkers, water, rocks, etc., why weren't they more carefully placed for a more exciting game? The elevations and the caddies seemed to be accurate, but be certain you allow for the raised greens or you are going to continually end up with chip shots instead of putts. Hole 15, par 4, 404y, at about 274y, a creek crosses the fairway forcing you to lay-up with a 3w. A driver would definitely take you into the water. After that you come to an elevated green guarded by three bunkers a good 6 iron will clear these bunkers giving you a par or possibly a birdie. Watch your club choice being mindful of the elevated green. Hole 16. par 5, 616y, when you drive on this hole make sure you keep to the right of the fairway or you will run the danger of having to clear some very tall trees with your second shot which will put you in front of a water hazard for your approach shot to the flag. Hole 17, par 4, 304y, a seemingly well guarded green is very accessible with a well hit driver. A carefully hit pw should put you into position for at least a par on this sloped green. Hole 18, par, 3, 233y, with an awkward distance like this I found that a flop 3w was my best choice even though I landed long on the green I was able to salvage a par. As I went farther and farther into this course I thought I wouldn't have one hole to write about when the course abruptly changed. It was though someone else designed the last four holes. If the entire course had been similar to the last four, "it could have been a contender". If you have broadband or are willing to wait for this to download via dialup, fine, otherwise I wouldn't recommend this course. Yes, it's beautiful as I said before, but there are many other more challenging courses out there. It is a very playable course but not a keeper for me. I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players. "loners Rating is 74% |
